New Classroom Building, Student Gathering Areas and Facilities Modernization Designed by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects
ALAMEDA, Calif. (May 28, 2019) – Last week, Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of Measure I facilities bond work at Encinal Jr. and Sr. High School (EHS). The $42 million project designed by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) includes a new two-story, 12-classroom building, major modernization upgrades to existing classrooms, new central student gathering and outdoor learning areas, and a redesigned front entrance. EHS serves approximately 1,300 students in grades six through twelve.
“We are so excited to see this project begin,” said AUSD Superintendent Sean McPhetridge. “EHS already has an amazing location by the Bay and a wide range of excellent programs. We can now provide the Encinal school community with a beautiful 21st century campus to match our curriculum.”
Expected to complete late 2021, EHS’s 16,000 square-foot new classroom building also boasts a maker space. Two new quads and new outdoor learning areas will be added, expanding places on campus for student gathering and collaboration. The current front parking lot will be relocated in conjunction with creating a new drop-off area, and landscaping will create an inviting entrance to the school. Modernization work includes new walls, windows, ceilings, restrooms and floors in older wings of the school, as well as upgrades to critical infrastructure and security systems. Additionally, existing undersized classrooms will be enlarged for improved learning environments.
“As a long-time partner we have had many opportunities to create cohesive and modern campuses for each unique school, and for EHS, these new and reconfigured spaces will complement the school’s needs for years to come,” said QKA Principal Mark Quattrocchi. “Safety, innovation and environmental responsibility are top priorities that I feel confident we have worked together to achieve at EHS.”
The project’s scope also includes new exterior sun shades and improved corridor ventilation for existing buildings. Indoor air quality will be improved through new heating and ventilation in classrooms that previously did not have ventilation and new classroom sun shades will allow teachers and students to experience daylight without glare. The project will be built by general contractor Lathrop Construction.
