Dive Brief:
- According to a new report from advocacy group the New Building Initiative (NBI), there are now 32 commercial structures in the U.S. that generate as much energy as they consume.
- NBI's list is an update to a 2012 report, and it says the 32 buildings achieving net zero are spread across 36 states and several types of buildings
- In addition to the 32 buildings, NBI said it had verified net-zero status for one group of buildings, was watching 127 projects that are shooting for net-zero but do not have a year of data for verification and knows of 53 buildings that are as efficient in their energy use as the net-zero buildings but do not generate power to balance all they use.
Dive Insight:
NBI is a non-profit that tries to encourage building efficiency. It is not focused only on the Holy Grail of net-zero energy use. This report's total of 213 buildings (counting the "zone" group of buildings as one) more than doubles the 99 NBI had verified in the 2012 report.
