Dive Brief:
- Construction on the Sacramento Kings' $534.9 million Golden 1 Center is on pace to be complete in the next two months — a little over two years since general contractor Turner Construction first broke ground on the project.
- Team president Chris Granger told the Sacramento Bee that he has "no concerns about the timing at this point," with events in the new arena scheduled for late September and early October.
- In addition to the new arena, which includes an adjacent practice facility and the world's largest indoor scoreboard, construction crews are also building a hotel and condo tower next to the facility. That project isn't expected to be complete until 2017.
Dive Insight:
Sacramento officials, who approved construction of the new arena in 2014, said they hope it will revitalize the downtown area. According to local Sacramento news station KCRA, the arena project has already drawn in hotel and office developers, who have expressed interest in building near the new complex.
Last month, Major League Soccer franchise D.C. United awarded Turner a $150 million contract to build its $300 million, 19,000-seat, waterfront stadium in Washington, DC. Officials project the venue, which is expected to open in time for the 2018 MLS season, will generate approximately 1,000 construction and permanent jobs and $1 billion in economic activity. They added that 50% of the commercial space expected to be built around the stadium will be set aside for local businesses.
Last year, Turner was lauded for completing the San Francisco 49ers' Levi's stadium $80 million under budget. City officials pointed to solid project management, and competitively priced subcontractors. In addition, good weather preventing costly delays, and low interest rates contributed to the less-than-expected final price tag of $930 million.
