Dive Insight:
New York-based Turner, one of the largest construction companies in the U.S., is also a joint venture partner with Kiewit on the troubled Veterans Administration hospital project in Aurora, CO. The project broke ground in 2010, and, since then, the cost overruns have added up to $1 billion and completion has been pushed back to 2018. Congressional investigators determined that the VA has so mismanaged this and other projects that that they voted to hand responsibility of future VA projects of more than $100 million over to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Turner is also the contractor on the Valley Medical Center in Santa Clara County, CA. Tensions between Turner and the county came to a head in September, and Turner was terminated. However, after four months of negotiations, Turner started work again, with the new deal reportedly requiring both the company and the county to drop their legal actions against each other.
