The city of Dallas has selected a joint venture led by AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction for the first phase of the $3.7 billion Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center project, the JV announced Monday.
Serving as construction manager at risk, the Trinity Alliance JV will oversee the full scope of preconstruction, construction and related demolition services for the first component of the project: the convention center expansion. The price tag of the construction manager contract was not released.
The budget for the full project is $3.7 billion, according to the project website — an increase from the $1.9 billion estimated cost in 2021, according to KERA News. It will expand the current convention center to more than 2 million square feet and transform downtown Dallas with upcoming new entertainment venues, restaurants and a multimodal transit center, according to the project website.
The venue will serve as the International Broadcast Center for the 2026 FIFA men’s soccer World Cup, serving as home base for thousands of television and radio reporters from around the world.
To help fund the project, the city of Dallas is considering a $1 billion bridge loan, although the loan proposal brought concerns from some city council members during a briefing last month, according to KERA News. A vote on the measure is expected next week.
The Trinity Alliance team has worked together on several other high-profile projects including the $2 billion Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, the $500 million Fort Worth Convention Center in Texas and parts of the $600 million Las Vegas Convention Center expansion. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center project will mark the 40th convention center delivered by the team.
