Pittsburgh International Airport’s $1.57 billion modernization project, one of the largest airport projects currently underway in the U.S., is 80% complete and on track to open later this year, according to a Jan. 24 news release shared with Construction Dive.
The project, led by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, will consolidate airline operations, public spaces and passengers under one roof, and introduce a new roadway system and multilevel parking garage.
As of now, workers have installed the first escalators, tested the baggage system and placed the first ceiling tiles, per the news release. In the first half of this year, crews will focus on finishing interior details, including the installation of airline ticket counters, the new security checkpoint and the completion of the connector bridge linking the new and old terminals.
The team will also work on a bridge and tunnel that will link the new terminal to the current airside terminal.
Pittsburgh-based Mascaro is the general contractor for the project. The construction management team is led by New York City-based Turner Construction and a joint venture between Pittsburgh-based PJ Dick and Indianapolis-based Hunt.
Local workers are building the terminal, and more than 85% of materials are locally sourced, per the release. The new structure is set to open in 2025.
