Dive Brief:
-
KB Home, the country’s fifth-largest builder, has introduced a single-family home that it says “doubles up” on water and energy efficiency.
-
The Los Angeles-based builder debuted its second Double ZeroHouse last week in El Dorado Hills, CA. The company says the net-zero energy home incorporates extra insulation; super high-efficiency heating and cooling systems; high-performance windows; and LED lighting, as well as roof-mounted solar panels.
-
The home’s “double zero” moniker derives from the builder’s emphasis on both water and energy efficiency. The WaterSense-labeled house comes with a water and energy recycling system, which redirects “gray water” from shower, laundry, and sink drains to the home’s toilets for reuse, so they use zero fresh water. In addition, a power storage system stores energy during the day that could be used in case of a power outage.
Dive Insight:
One KB division president calls the energy- and water-efficient home the builder’s “smartest … to date,” noting that its future owners will be able to use a smartphone or tablet to turn lights, appliances, and even electric car chargers on and off remotely.
