Any residential or commercial building that goes up in California after Jan. 1, 2014, must have a “solar-ready” roof, the California Energy Commission said in new building guidelines it approved last week.
That is not to say all the new buildings will have to have solar panels installed. What's required is that the roofs be able to accommodate solar installations.
