Dive Brief:
- A German concrete maker and researchers at a scientific institute have devised and calculated the performance characteristics of a bombproof concrete that bends without breaking and requires about half as much as conventional concrete for a given level of protection.
- The concrete is an extra hard mix and has a fine mesh of reinforced steel in it, scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for High Speed Dynamics and the Ernst Mach-Institut in Efringen-Kirchener, Germany, said.
- The concrete is more protective because humans are endangered more by flying debris, including pieces of shattered concrete when a bomb is detonated.
Dive Insight:
Without revealing specific locations in the building, the scientists say the new type of concrete was used in constructing the One World Trade Center tower in New York City, with "several thousand square meters" being used "at points within the building where safety is especially critical."
