St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Cos. marked the concrete pour topping out of the $500 million Hoag Hospital Irvine Expansion Project in Irvine, California, on Jan. 31, the company told Construction Dive via email.
Contractors added 450,000 square feet of space to the facility, including two inpatient hospital buildings, two outpatient medical offices, a logistics building, a dedicated urgent care unit for cancer patients and an expansion to an existing inpatient hospital.
The new facilities will include cutting-edge technology and advanced surgical suites, according to McCarthy. Unique features of the build include laser scanning technology, a collection of buildings with interconnected tunnel systems and a co-location office.
Natural daylight and garden views are incorporated into all patient rooms, staff respite zones, family areas and communal spaces. The exterior also includes outdoor spaces for dining, gathering, therapeutic movement or quiet reflection and meditation, according to the release.
Construction is slated to finish in 2026, according to Hoag, the regional healthcare system that runs the Irvine hospital.
