Columbia, Maryland-based Harkins Builders has opened a new office in Durham, North Carolina, according to a press release shared with Construction Dive.
The contractor, founded in 1965 and 100% employee-owned, has delivered small- to medium-sized government, commercial and multifamily projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the Carolinas.
Harkins first expanded in North Carolina in 2018 in the greater Charlotte area, by opening an office and starting a project in Mecklenburg County. Now, the contractor has $275 million in work in progress and 50 employees across the Carolinas, so it elected to invest in a dedicated location focused on further expansion, according to the release.
The Raleigh-Durham team has two multifamily projects underway or nearing work in the region. The first, dubbed Altitude, is a 118-unit community under construction off Interstate 40 in Raleigh. The project includes studio, one- and two-bedroom units along with a clubhouse, lounge, fitness center and yoga studio.
The second, which the team expects to break ground on this fall, is Arden at Summit Pines, a 156-unit senior living community.
Project manager Patrick Fay will lead operations in the market, while vice president Josh Zilke will provide executive oversight, the release said.
