Dive Brief:
- Occupancy sensors and daylighting controls will be required in more areas of buildings than the 2012 edition of the code specified.
- Air-cooled, direct expansion HVAC units of 4.5 tons or more will have to have fault-detection capabilities that produce information available to regular maintenance staff.
- "Historic building" has been better defined, and exceptions for historic buildings have been limited.
Dive Insight:
The changes have two goals – reducing environmental damage and saving money for building operators. One effort during recent meetings on the 2015 edition was to reconcile areas where the IECC and the International Code Council's Performance Code differed, which should encourage adoption. None of the provisions will have effects, however, if regulating governments do not adopt them.
