Dive Brief:
- Trulia has an important announcement to make... for gingerbread families. According to the real estate site, the best place for a gingerbread family to live is Torrance, CA.
- The deciding factors involve climate, as gingerbread families prefer temperatures to remain around 70 degrees; the number of nearby grocery stores and bakeries, for home repairs, of course; the number of dentists in the area, due to the gingerbread man's fear of dentists; and more. Torrance was followed by Scottsdale, AZ, and Berkeley, CA, as the best locations, while the worst include Detroit and Newark, DE.
- This is all part of a broader Trulia campaign with Rachael Ray Every Day for a chance to win $2,000, a daily contest dubbed Daily Dough that started Dec. 1 and runs through Dec. 12 — National Gingerbread House Day. On Saturday, Trulia will announce the result of the gingerbread couple's 12 days of house hunting.
Dive Insight:
Real estate sites have offered countless lists of the hottest housing markets, predictions for 2016, the best locations for millennials, and more. But Trulia's list is the most unique we've seen recently, as it focuses on the incredibly niche homebuying market of gingerbread families. Southern California dominates the Top 10 list, but luckily for the rest of the country, other recent reports of "hot" housing markets include more of an equal representation of other U.S. regions.
Although a list of the best cities for gingerbread houses was an unexpected report from Trulia, real estate sites have shown they aren't afraid to have some fun with their housing market research. In October, RealtyTrac released its list of the five most haunted U.S. housing markets in honor of Halloween.
