Providence, Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co. has added former Lendlease executive Steven Carter as its new director of global health and safety, the contractor announced on Aug. 14.
In his new role, Carter will bolster the company’s safety program, which includes training, compliance and its jobsite safety culture, according to a news release. Carter started his role earlier this month, and is currently based out of Los Angeles, per his LinkedIn.
Before joining Gilbane, Carter spent more than 13 years with Australian builder Lendlease, most recently as its director of environment, health and safety, while based in the U.S., per Carter’s LinkedIn. His departure comes at a time when the firm is refocusing its priorities on domestic work and selling some of its assets.
Carter began his career in operational roles, including running his own business, and later moved into safety work, per Gilbane. He has a master's degree in occupational safety and health from Greenwich University in the U.K.
Carter is the latest in a string of high-profile hires for the contractor. Earlier this month, Gilbane tapped Anthony Armento to lead preconstruction efforts out of the firm’s Philadelphia office, and hired Greg Garvin to lead procurement in July.
“Steve's forward-thinking strategies in occupational health and safety will reinforce Gilbane's strong safety commitment," said Heidi DeBenedetti, the company’s chief operating officer, in the news release.
