Dive Brief:
- A Dutch architectural firm is experimenting with constructing a canal-side house that will be made all of panels created with a 3-D printer dedicated to the project.
- So far, Dus Architects has built a 3-meter-high (about 10 feet) corner section of the building.
- The plan is for 13 rooms altogether and for lightweight concrete to provide structural support and insulation.
Dive Insight:
The firm uses a printer it has named KamerMaker, which translates as Room Builder, and the material is a recyclable mixture of plant oil and microfibers. The architects say it is a test they expect to do over the next three years, but it is getting enough attention that a visit to their office got onto President Obama's agenda when he was in Europe last week. The project has its own website.
