Dive Brief:
- According to plans announced by the developer of Brooklyn's Barclays Center, the arena's white roof is slated for 130,000 square feet of greenery.
- Forest City Ratner Cos. plans 6,400 apartments in 15 towers as its Atlantic Yards project moves ahead with a number of them overlooking the arena, and green is considered a better marketing ploy than glaring white with a Barclays Bank logo painted on it.
- A green roof had been in the original arena design, but it was cut for costs between the 2003 announcement of the project and the opening in 2012.
Dive Insight:
Forest City Ratner Cos. says the roof design is still in process, and there is no date for it to be installed. Current neighbors reportedly will be happy when it is, though, because it is expected to help dampen sound from concerts held at the arena.
