- An accident that police said might have been due to soft soil at a construction site in Maplewood, Minn., near the Twin Cities took the life of a crane operator whose machine tipped over.
- The cab of the 16-wheeled crane sank part way into soft soil while operator Cory Lewellin, 34, was still in it, police reported.
- The crane's outriggers were deployed, a police commander said, but he speculated that they might have sunk into the soil, allowing the crane to go over on Monday.

The state's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting an investigation. Truck Crane Service of Egan, Minn., was the owner, and the company has no violations listed in state records for the past five years. Lewellin's co-workers were trying to dig him out of the cab when rescue workers got to the scene. Lewellin was pronounced dead at the hospital where he was rushed.
