Dive Brief:
-
The Port San Antonio has broken ground on a $20 million, 90,000-square-foot office building for technology companies — specifically those with a cybersecurity focus — that will be part of a new 17-acre tech campus there, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.
-
Five more buildings are planned for the site, which will deliver 500,000 square feet of office space in all. Already, "nearly a dozen" firms have expressed interest in the new building, according to the Journal, with tenant move-in slated for 2018.
-
The Port hopes the site's proximity to Lackland Air Force Base will draw interest among potential tenants, both local and national. Meanwhile, the San Antonio City Council is considering $1.5 million for public infrastructure at the campus.
Dive Insight:
The Port is far from the only landlord these days seeking to spur interest among potential technology company tenants. RAL Development Services, for example, is heading up the construction of a $250 million tech center in Manhattan that will offer training, education and support for tech startups and their employees.
In Ashburn, VA, developer 22 CityLink is working with AECOM, Virginia-based Trinity Construction, The George Washington University, the Center for Innovative Technology and Microsoft to build a $500 million smart city as a model for future sustainable-minded, high-tech developments. The 16.8-acre Gramercy District will be outfitted with on-location sensors and other monitoring technology as well as Wi-Fi, electric vehicle charging and smart lighting.
Where tenants are concerned, the campus will include a startup incubator as well as leasable office space, co-working and education centers, and hotels and apartments. It will also have access to the Washington, DC, metro area's public transportation network.
Most recently, the project added an 8-acre, mixed-used development that it plans to open in 2018, a year ahead of the main project's 2019 reveal. The annex will include office, retail and multifamily housing.
