Reston, Virginia-based contractor Bechtel opened a new office in Chandler, Arizona, a booming hub of semiconductor manufacturing, the company announced on June 28.
The No. 2 contractor on the ENR Top 400 Contractors list said that the office will serve as an important location for Bechtel’s manufacturing and technology business, per the release. The division, led by its president, Catherine Hunt Ryan, was established last year to target sectors such as semiconductors, synthetic materials, data centers and electric vehicle products and facilities.
With those goals for the division, the location is an asset to the company, as Arizona broadly has seen a boom in semiconductor manufacturing. For example, Intel is building two fabs at its Ocotillo campus in Chandler worth $20 billion, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is working on a $12 billion fab complex in Phoenix.
Bechtel’s new 8,000-square-foot office includes space for employees in disciplines such as engineering, procurement, project controls, and construction management, according to the release.
“The thriving business and high-tech landscape in the Metro Phoenix area allows Bechtel to attract top talent as we design and build projects for our customers,” Hunt Ryan said in the release.
Bechtel has also been active in the semiconductor construction industry as the federal government doles out $39 billion in funds as part of the $52 billion CHIPS Act for the clusters across the country. The contractor was selected for Phase 1 of Intel’s $20 billion fab complex in Licking County, Ohio, which broke ground in September.
