Dive Brief:
- An Evans, CO, construction company, One-Stop Construction and Landscapes, scored the job of a lifetime: building an outdoor hedge maze as an addition to the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO, which inspired the famous structure in "The Shining."
- The Stanley Hotel is proud of its pop culture fame and commemorates the 1980 film with paranormal tours and constant showings of the movie. However, until now, the building did not have the maze that was featured in the film.
- The owner of the hotel, John Cullen, introduced an international design competition during November of 2014. The contest received 329 entries, and One-Stop Construction and Landscapes was named the winner earlier this year. The company began constructing the maze late last week and is expected to complete the project this month.
Dive Insight:
Stephen King, author of "The Shining," came up with the idea for the novel while he was staying at The Stanley Hotel. However, the structure was not the one featured in the movie.
Jesse Alfaro, owner of One-Stop Construction and Landscapes, said he asked his crew to watch the movie, based off of the book, before agreeing to work on the project "just to make them see what they were getting into."
Fortunately, the hotel's general manager David Ciani confirmed the maze will not be as mysterious or life-threatening as the movie version. “It won’t be nearly the size as far as the height of the hedges ... You have to be able to find your way out of there," he said.
