Associated Builders and Contractors offers a four-step program for non-union construction companies that want to earn certification as using an environmentally friendly approach to their projects and their employees.
The national group says contractors can gain three ways by earning green certification:
- marketplace advantage and cost savings in operations
- improved employee morale and greater health protection
- savings in energy, water and raw materials
The third-party inspectors who certify companies' accomplishments are largely LEED-certified architects, according to a list on the ABC website.
The organization says its program "is designed to document the merit shop construction community’s efforts to develop a sustainable workplace environment – both on and off the jobsite – as well as recognize ABC member firms that are green industry leaders."
