Dive Brief:
-
The tallest building in the United States—One World Trade Center—was completed in 2014, and ground broke on the Saudi Arabian tower that will become the world’s highest skyscraper when it’s finished in five years.
-
Next year, construction on almost a dozen height-defying buildings will finish up, reported CNN. See photos of them here.
-
The 10 tallest buildings to open for business next year are: Shanghai Tower, Wuhan Center, Dalian Eton Place Tower 1 and Forum 66 Tower 2, China; Marina 101 and ADNOC Headquarters, Dubai; 432 Park Ave, New York; Capital Market Authority Tower, Saudi Arabia; and Vostok Tower and OKO-South Tower, Moscow.
Dive Insight:
The tallest towers are under construction in some of the world’s fastest-growing cities. But in the United States, many large cities have height restrictions or otherwise resist uber-tall structures.
That trend could be changing as a lack of undeveloped land in prime urban locations runs short and building up is the only way to build big. Even Washington, D.C., which imposes a 130-foot limit on building height, is considering raising its sights.
