Dive Brief:
-
The 850,000-square-foot Home Depot Direct Fulfillment Center that opened this week in Perris, CA, will allow the nation’s largest home-improvement retailer to fill orders hourly, speeding delivery to online customers so they get their products within two or three days without paying for expedited shipping.
-
The green building, which will serve the West Coast, has 390 skylights and an ultra-efficient air conditioning system. Officials have said the giant warehouse is a zero landfill facility.
-
Customers who order online may have their products delivered to their homes or to one of the chain’s 2,266 stores for pickup.
Dive Insight:
The building is automated to move product faster, store officials said. It is one of the chain’s three new fulfillment centers. Another one opened earlier this year near Atlanta, and the third will be in Troy, Ohio.
