Dive Brief:
- Fortune, in collaboration with the Great Place to Work Institute, has issued its 2016 ranking of the 100 best companies to work for, and four construction companies made the list.
- The companies, two of which also made Fortune's 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials list last June, are David Weekley Homes in Houston, TX; Power Home Remodeling in Chester, PA; PCL Construction in Denver, CO; and TDIndustries in Dallas, TX.
- From a cape-wearing CEO to Caribbean cruises, these companies all make an effort to show employees know how valued they are, create a safe workplace and have fun while they're doing it, according to Fortune.
Dive Insight:
David Weekley Homes (No. 17) is a luxury homebuilder that has changed the everyday language of the office. Performance evaluations are called "growth reviews," master bedrooms are "owners' retreats," and new employees learn all this courtesy of a free trip to company headquarters where they build Lego homes and learn about the company while watching a cape and tight-wearing CEO in a video tour through the company’s history. And one of the best perks? After a year of employment, an employee is eligible for 10% off a new home.
Power Home Remodeling (No. 59), an exterior remodeling contractor, foots the bill for an annual trip somewhere warm for each employee and a guest, and top management keeps the line of communication open by visiting each of the 10 locations. Also along the communication lines, Power has its own television channel called "Power TV," with "roaming reporter" interviews and a news show based on the "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Update.
PCL Construction (No. 60) is 100% employee-owned and touts safety as their main focus. The company boasts a safety record five times better than the national average, and hosts a safety week that includes trivia, construction-themed baked goods and safety-related prizes and awards.
TDIndustries (No. 65) has developed its own rules of communication, starting with "no rank in the room," referring to employees as partners and making sure everyone is on a first-name basis. TD is also employee-owned, but no partner owns more than 4% of the company.
The fact that two of the four construction companies on Fortune's list also claimed spots on the Best Workplaces for Millennials ranking last year demonstrates the importance of adapting to become a desired company for younger workers. The lack of millennials in the construction industry has been cited as one of the main factors contributing to the ongoing labor shortage.
